Summary

Within our lives we all would have experienced a degree of anxiety when playing sport. Whether that is playing competitively for an academy or playing grassroots sport with friends, we have all experienced some form of anxiety. Anxiety affects people in different ways. Some people will experience a range of unhelpful thoughts which can go through their mind, whereas others can experience strong unhelpful physiological symptoms (increased heart rate, muscle tension, sweating). For some people anxiety can become a regular occurrence and can have a detrimental impact on performance.

This training plan has been designed to help athletes develop a better understanding of what happens to their mind and body during times of stress and pressure. We will explore the flight/fight response and provide you with practical strategies to become more aware of your anxiety and how to manage physiological symptoms. We will also explore the relationship between anxiety and negative thoughts and help you to learn how you can start challenging unhelpful thoughts.
