Summary

The relationship between coach and athlete can play a large role within not only their sporting performance but also their wellbeing and mental health.  Throughout an athletes career you will be shaping and developing a number of cognitive, behavioural and emotional factors and you will be guiding athletes through a number of developmental and psychological transitions. Within the world of sport there has been an underutilisation of mental health services and the current approach to mental illness is fraught with stigmatisation. One way we can help to build positive mental health habits and support athletes to seek out help is through appropriate mental health literacy and education. This online course has been designed to provide coaches with the knowledge of how they can start supporting their athletes mental health. It will cover a variety of topics including:

  • An understanding of mental health in sport
  • The mental health continuum
  • How coaches can encourage athletes to talk about their mental health
  • Risk factors and mental health (injury, transitions, eating disorders, burnout)
  • How coaches can monitor athletes mental health
  • A introduction to depression, generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder
  • How coaches can incorporate mental health into every day coaching
  • How coaches can promote coping skills
